Jim Tracy And Mike Scioscia Named MLB’s Managers Of The Year

Los Angeles Angels manager Mike Scioscia won the AL Manager of the Year award, while Jim Tracy of the Colorado Rockies won the NL Manager of the Year award today. Tracy took over as manager during the regular season, after the Rockies fired Clint Hurdle. If news of the award wasn’t good enough for Tracy, then maybe a new contract with the team would do the job. Tracy signed a three-year deal to stay as the Rockies Manager. After the tragic death of Angeles pitcher Nick Adenhart manager Mike Scioscia kept his team from falling off the track and guided them to their 5th AL West title in six seasons. Colorado was 18-28 when Tracy took over, since then they went 72-48, and made the playoffs as the NL wild card, pretty impressive for a bench coach taking over for a struggling Rockies team. The Angels had a tough season due to injuries and to a freak car accident that cost rookie pitch Nick Adenhart his life.

Los Angeles had to use 14 starting pitchers during the regular season. Nothing stuck with this team more than the loss of there teammate, a big part of their success was to do it for him and they showed it out on the field. Both teams were eliminated from the playoffs, with the Rockies losing in the divisional series to the Phillies and the Angels losing in the championship series to the Yankees. Tony La Russa finished second in the voting for the NL, while Ron Gardenhire finished second for the AL.

Tracy was highly excited for his new contract and was honored by his NL manager of the year award. What we’re talking about this afternoon, it’s probably as flattering an experience as I’ve come to realize during the course of my professional career in athletics, and obviously a new contract is extremely exciting. But what is more intriguing for me is what is still out there for our ballclub” Tracy said. Hopefully for Tracy and the Rockies organizations there are good things in the future. For Scioscia and the Angels the year wasn’t as they were planning, “Some things, you’re never prepared for, but those things really weren’t about us. They were about the Adenhart family and I think as we supported them we found some peace.”

Scioscia said. Jim Tracy received 29 first place votes while totaling 155; Mike Scioscia received 15 first place votes while totaling 106. Twins manager Ron Gardenhire finished 2nd in the voting for the second straight year, a worthy candidate for this award, the Twins came back late in the season and battled injury to beat the Tigers in a one game tiebreaker that put the Twins in the playoffs. One things for sure, you can’t argue about these winners as they are great coaches of the game and greatly deserve the award.
