The Rise Of The Red Letter Day

Remember the days when birthday gifts were just about socks, bottles of wine, or, god forbid, book vouchers? The wave of disappointment that one experiences when tearing the wrapping paper off a huge box only to discover that a deck chair or something equally practical lies beneath is familiar for many. Even more prestigious gifts such as clothing, DVDs or alcohol are predictably run of the mill, things you could have just brought yourself on any high street. Some years back the ‘gift experience’ was pioneered, a token for an organised activity rather than a tangible product, it was intended for alternative birthday or Christmas gifts and it enjoyed a great level of success initially, taking off like a rocket.

Typical gift bundles comprised of Ferrari driving days where the lucky recipient would be granted the opportunity to go crazy in a selection of the scarlet machines within the relatively safe confines of a race circuit, or extreme sports experiences such as zorbing or snowboarding, both thought of as great gifts for him. Gifts or her on the other hand revolved around slightly more tranquil pursuits such as spa days, makeovers and dicing lessons. As these kind of gifts became more and more popular the market grew to the point of saturation, many different companies were offering the same products and the red letter day almost became a clich©, a Ferrari driving experience was no longer a surprise for the guy that had everything.

Innovation was needed, and it came! The gift experience market had to diversify in order to stay ahead of the game and attract new consumers as well as offering variety to lotal customers. Many specialist businesses began to offer a variety of products akin to that of a retail outlet, as well as the traditional driving and ‘days out’ gifts all manner of obscure additions were made such as undercover detective training days, outdoor survival tutorials and whale watching. Imagine the look on the face of your loved ones when they receive one of those on Christmas morning! This year think outside the box, instead of taking the safe option with a new tie, send them hurtling down the side of the mountain in the middle of a huge inflatable ball!

Say Sorry With These Gifts

When someone is angry with you for something you have done you are looking for many ways to say sorry. While saying sorry we have always said sorry to someone with a gift. Guys generally give flowers, silver jewellery or teddy bear toys to say sorry to their wives or girlfriends. I am not saying this gesture will make her forgive you but this has worked for many in the past.

Women love surprises and they love jewellery. If your mistake was not a big one then the jewellery might just melt her to forgive you. If it was then you might just have to work harder than that.

Everyone loves flowers, especially flowers and they always seem to bring a smile on people’s faces. Colourful and bright flowers are a gesture of appreciation, love and thanks. We take flowers we someone invites us for a meal. When we go to a hospital we take flowers. When we go to a funeral we take flowers. Why do we do this? Of course to show our appreciation towards them. Flowers now just seems like a traditional way to either thank someone or say sorry to someone, it has been going for many years. Women do love flowers and we all know that.

Teddy bear toys are given to their loved ones to say sorry, mostly teenagers but it seems to work. There are teddy bear toys with writing “I am sorry” or “I love you” or “Please forgive me” which you can find in many toy shops. This is another way of showing your appreciation and also apologising at the same time.

One thing you have to remember is, it’s not the silver necklaces or silver rings you buy them, it’s the thought that counts that you made a mistake and you are not willing to make that mistake again. Gifts are just used in a way to express your feeling if you are struggling to find the words to say sorry.
